The Role

According to applicable manufacturers, industry, regulatory standards, shop practices and procedures; operate, develop, construct, layout, install, service, rebuild, maintain, investigate, modify and correct malfunctions on all types of electrical and/or electronic power transmission/distribution and generation equipment, circuits and systems including medium voltage equipment and associated controls. Perform initial checkout/functional testing and commissioning of company assets that have been installed, repaired or rebuilt to ensure proper functioning of the control, protection, and monitoring systems.


The Company will provide appropriate assistance in job training to enable employees to safely perform all necessary job functions including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Perform the above referenced activity on all types of electrical power transmission/distribution and generation equipment, circuits and systems, including but not limited to, power transformers, distribution centers, circuit breakers, control, protection, metering, data, and monitoring electrical systems; including sub-distribution/lighting and generation, equipment below the secondary transformer side of the industrial substations including generation all below 600 volts; raceways, lighting, associated lighting controls, generation systems, power transformers, distribution centers and systems, circuit breakers, breaker panels, data communications (related to power dist. equip.) and electrical systems
  • Use and update processes, blueprints, schematics, software, and wiring diagrams to determine compliance with wiring specifications and location for all electrical and electronic installations subject to applicable specifications, codes, standards, and ordinances to accomplish work assignments.
  • Devise and fabricate any necessary testing aids and equipment
  • Use applicable tools, instruments, electronic test, setup and monitoring devices and shop theory to accomplish work assignments
  • Maintain current licenses and certifications required to perform the above duties and responsibilities.
  • Assemble and verify data for necessary records and reports, complete paperwork electronically or manually, and order parts associated with the work assignments
  • Work with and assist other employees engaged in the operation, maintenance, installation, repair, retrofit, modification, calibration, adjustment and test of electrical power transmission, distribution and generation systems for plant facilities

Key Accountabilities

  • Coordinate and work with Management, Engineering, Contractors, Equipment Manufacturers/Vendors and other organizations to analyze facility power and equipment design for the purpose of safety, capacity, contingency and improvement requirements and to plan, design, and provide equipment specifications, installation oversight and sequence the installation of new and rebuilt power equipment and systems
  • Train employees and perform other duties as requested or required
  • Perform maintenance, construction, operate, install, repair, and rebuild, according to applicable shop theories, practices and procedures, the following typical types of Utility Type Transmission and Distribution equipment: electrical power generation/distribution equipment, lighting systems for plant facilities and microprocessor controlled equipment (related to power dist. equip.), and test equipment. Perform system operation function under the direction of designated system operator. Investigate and correct electrical/electronic malfunctions using test panel and testing devices as required to complete work assignments
  • Following the safety regulations called out in the power distribution procedures, perform work on equipment associated with the Plant electrical power transmission, distribution and generation systems, including but not limited to: power transformers, circuit breakers, distribution centers, high voltage power cable, data, monitoring, control, SCADA systems, communication and associated software and components of the above typical company assets. Perform initial checkout of company assets that have been installed, repaired or rebuilt to ensure proper functioning of the control, protection, and monitoring systems
  • Perform initial setting installation, functional testing, verification/correction of documentation, investigation and correction of electrical, electronic, and fiber optic malfunctions on primary system control, protection and 9 metering systems, Electrical Power Generation/Transmission/Distribution Equipment and Systems including microprocessor controlled devices and associated test equipment.
  • During initial checkout/commissioning of new and rebuilt assets and systems, troubleshoot and correct software, design, and engineering related issues
  • Design, support and maintain electronic systems required for the operation of the Power Transmission/Distribution system
  • Work with and assist in the planning/executing of work supporting crews in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the sites high voltage “Utility Type” equipment and systems
  • Coordinate with other organizations and specialties to provide reliability failure analysis, contingency planning, load growth, system capacity and problem resolution for assets and systems
  • Research, develop, evaluate and deliver skill training
  • Data management; Develop and maintain operating system maps and drawings (electrical, topographical, mechanical, control)
  • Coordinate with appropriate utility (Westar) for the purpose of system operations with TSO, DSO and Engineering

Skills & Experience

Required Skills:

  • Experienced in the operation and maintenance of Heavy Industrial Electrical Power Systems including over 600-volt equipment
  • Prior work within an electric utility and completion of a utility apprenticeship is desired
  • Requires good communication skills, ability to work well and take direction form others and work as a team
