JOB DESCRIPTION

Engineer III

Personnel in this job title may be covered by NERC CIP cyber security standards. If the position is covered, prior to being hired, promoted, or transferred into the position, the candidate must successfully pass a Personnel Risk Assessment, which includes identity verification and a criminal background check. Prior to being granted unescorted access to cyber secure areas, the candidate must attend cyber security training. Annual cyber security training is also required.

SUMMARY:

Under general supervision plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates the engineering work for a total project of moderate scope or for detailed phases of part of a major project.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs system modeling, Arc Flash calculations, short circuit studies, protective relay settings, and coordination.

Develops and improves standard protection schemes to comply with NERC/CIP standards

Analyzes Fault event reports on transmission and distribution systems disturbances and protection scheme operations to determine root causes and recommend system improvements

Performs electrical design of protection schemes and standards development

Provides technical direction to design, construction, operations, maintenance, planning, and customer service personnel relating to distribution, transmission, and substation issues

Completes relay coordination analyses and determines appropriate settings for intermediate to complex substation projects with minimal guidance and direction.

Performs studies, prepares and provides written and oral reports to executive management, internal and external customers, and may act as an expert witness, in legal proceedings, if required.

Applies technical expertise and knowledge in developing state-of-the-art solutions to complex protection problems, including the analysis of power system disturbances.

Assists in the development of company system protection philosophy; conducts the design of protection schemes

Manages all the engineering aspects of projects of moderate scope or detailed phases of major project efforts

Leads or conducts performance, cost, and scheduling studies of varying size that are generally conventional in nature

Supports operational areas through the application of standard and non-standard engineering techniques, practices, and procedures

Communicates engineering ideas, recommendations, and evaluations to diverse internal groups in a working or conference type environment

Represents the company's interests in engineering matters that may be varied and complex in nature

Interacts with and provides broad knowledge technical support to other associates

Applies engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards

Provides technical direction and/or activity supervision to contractors and company personnel on a regular, on-going basis

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a college/university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET), plus four or more years of engineering experience or three or more with a Fundamentals of Engineering certificate or three or more with a Master's Degree in Engineering.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

Fundamentals of Engineering certificate is preferred.

Must possess current, legally valid driver's license and meet the Company's driving record requirements.

Principal Engineer

Given the financial nature of this position, this position may be required to obtain a credit check depending on location. If the position is covered, prior to being hired, promoted, or transferred into the position, the candidate must successfully pass a credit background check.

Serves as a technical specialist for the organization in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles and processes for an assigned area. Plans and develops engineering projects concerned with unique and/or potentially sensitive issues by performing the following duties.

Principal Engineers possess special knowledge and experience or are unique in their value to the Company. This level of engineer is for those individuals whose technical/professional responsibilities are significant enough to warrant a salary level comparable to Management level jobs. Promotion to a Principal Engineer requires that the need for this level of engineer exists, that market data supports placement at this level and approval by a Vice President.
